Bay of Biscay: the ultimate sailing adventure to tick off your sailing bucket list

Bay of Biscay

Tick the legendary Bay of Biscay off your sailing bucket list this spring aboard the steal 70-foot ocean-going cutter Global Surveyor as she sails through three countries from Lisbon and Baiona to Biscay Brest. Excellent combination of ocean sailing, mile building and learning under the supervision of our Yachtmaster instructor. This offshore sailing adventure offers sail training including astronavigation, ocean passage and experiencing one of the most challenging waters noted among sailors.

Bay of Biscay

Beginning in La Linea de la Conception in Lisbon, our route will take us north along the picturesque Portuguese coast. In the autonomous community of Galicia, Spain, we will be stopping at Baiona in the province of Pontevedra. The interest in sailing to Baiona lies not only in the perspective of the sailor, but also in its historical significance. On March 1, 1493, caravel La Pinta arrived here, separating from the stormbound La Niña, and announced the discovery of America a few days before Christopher Columbus reached Lisbon. Baiona is the last port of call before departing on the ultimate sailing adventure: Bay of Biscay.

A section of the Atlantic Ocean called the Bay of Biscay is situated off the northern and western coasts of Spain and France. Stretching from Point Penmarch in the north to Cape Ortegal (Galicia) in the south, it covers an area of 223,000 km². The region is recognised for its rough seas because a portion of the continental shelf extends deep into the bay, resulting in generally shallow waters in several places.

Time onboard/Experience level

The 7 day passage will be mostly ocean sailing with little time ashore. It is an involved passage the crew will be part of the passage planning, provisioning, boat preparation and part of the watch system that make it happen.

Our Global Surveyor sailings are suitable for people with no sailing experience, up to those who are experienced sailors. If you have little-to-no experience, please speak to Victoria at Go West Sailing so we can chat through sea life with you.
