As we found out earlier today on BBC News, the crew of Global Surveyor was very fortunate to see a rare white penguin in Antarctica. It happened during Go West Sailing ultimate adventure in January 2022 when visiting the Chilean González Videla Antarctic Base.
It seems we photographed a female penguin with leucism, an abnormal condition of reduced pigmentation affecting various animals that is marked by overall pale colour or patches of reduced colouring. The BBC News item and a video ‘Rare white penguin filmed in Antarctica’ is available below:
